Food-safe PLA?
I read that PLA itself is food-safe, but that the printing process is not.

Does anyone know a way to make PLA food-safe? Are there foodsafe FDM printers that print PLA? Is there a coating I can lay on?

blackshadow1946 - I am not sure about the fact if PLA being food safe but you can buy a filament that is called PETT I believe and it is food safe right out of the printer.

ashley@3dprintvancouver.com - PLA and PET are both technically food safe, BUT, most printers are not. Most nozzles are made from brass which can contain lead, and PTFE and PEEK which are commonly used in the filament feed mechanism, are also not food safe. You would need to custom build a printer that uses food safe components where it contacts the filament. The only hot end I know of that is food safe is the Prusa nozzle. I would think that you'd also want this whole thing housed in a dedicated clean room. Then you still have the issue that the layer lines and other defects inherent to 3D printing will trap bacteria.

ashley@3dprintvancouver.com - And you would also need to verify that your filament manufacturer uses food safe components in their extruder (i.e. no brass nozzles).

necf - surface finish is the hurdle I'm aware of

raykholo - To elaborate on what necf is saying - food safe requires that there are no crevices for bacteria to grow inside of. Example being pottery where a fired but unfinished clay vessel is not suitable but with enough glaze (overglaze) and another firing the surfaces are smooth and glossy enough to be food safe.

Theoretically a material can be cleaned after manufacturing so the "food safe printer" concern is secondary to me.
A new thermos at costco had very clear instructions on how to sterilize it, so don't think that those manufacturing lines are much better than your printer.

boxbluff_1 - When I saw this thread, I was hoping someone would have the answer, as I've always thought cups, cookie cutters, spoons et al, would be fun things to design and print.

I wonder if anyone on makexyz has an operating food-safe set up. Anyone know?

ashley@3dprintvancouver.com - @Raykholo, sterilizing only kills bacteria, it does not remove toxins (e.g. mycotoxins, heavy metals, etc). Because of the melting process, these toxins can become embedded in the plastic and then leach out slowly over time.

peterpik14 - I would also be interested in finding a "food grade", food safe, plastic (or process) that works in these printers. I'm trying to make some plastic toothpicks and need them to be safe to put in the mouth. I've heard that a plastic called Celcon is OK for this, but don't know for sure. Anyone information would be very much appreciated.

elpulpo - Definitely wouldn't recommend Celcon, AKA Delrin. It gives off Formaldehyde gas when overheated which, apart from being really nasty to breathe in, is also explosive. Oh yeah. It's carcinogenic too! :-o

I've looked into this on several occasions and TBH, I've reached the conclusion that it's simply not worth going to all the trouble of printing with a supposedly "food-grade" plastic as the printing process can change the chemistry of the material itself. You could contact Microban and ask them to develop a 3D printable version of their product or, if you can get hold of some granulated Microban, you could get someone to extrude some filament for you or, I suppose, if you use a medical grade plastic, you might safeguard yourself from criticism simply by arguing that it's the most biologically compatible material available.

Me? I'd happily munch on a 3D printed cocktail stick for half an hour but knowing how litigious things can get on your side of the pond there'd need to be a really persuasive business case.

peterpik14 - Thanks for your comments, pulpo. I guess I need to find out what plastic material the toothpicks you can buy in any store are made from and go from there.

intservo - PETG is food safe and is recommended for food container, toys. etc. PLA, although is made of biodegradable materials, are not fully food safe by FBA standard.

randybonnette - I thought there can't be food safe PLA. James Madison University experts analyzed the laboratory case with polylactic acid and Brian Obudho wrote about it on his blog. Whereas repetitive use may cause health concerns - Filaments company in Canada released a new safe PLA for 3D printers:

bill9 - As I read about the technological processes of some food, I would better choose brands that don't use those techniques in their production. I try to pay attention to organic food. By the way, that doesn't mean 'vegan' food. It means that it was made from natural components like chocolate on this <a href="https://chocolateandlove.com">website</a>.

clearpathortho - Marinating chicken is a culinary art that transforms simple poultry into a flavorful masterpiece. The concept revolves around allowing the chicken to soak up a medley of rich flavors. This process, known as marination, not only infuses the meat with delectable tastes but also tenderizes it, making it juicier and more succulent. Marinating chicken typically involves a blend of ingredients like herbs, spices, oils, acids, and seasonings, meticulously combined to create a harmonious flavor profile. Please check and try luftsfritös for more information. https://www.outlookindia.com/outlook-spotlight/test-airfryer-b%C3%A4st-i-test-sverige-varmluftsfrit%C3%B6s-b%C3%A4sta-airfryer-i-%C3%A5r--news-327819

The marinating time can vary, but it's crucial to give the chicken an adequate period to absorb these flavors. Whether it's a quick 30-minute dip or an overnight immersion, the result is a dish bursting with taste. The marination process also contributes to the depth and complexity of the final meal, ensuring every bite is a symphony of rich, mouthwatering notes. So, next time you prepare chicken, remember that time spent marinating is time well-invested in elevating your culinary creations.
