mkapras - I agree, we need more pricing options. That way we can be as up-front about what a job will cost as possible.

plexus - I also agree. Per volume doesn't make much sense to me. there is set-up, materials, print time, re-print time, clean up effort, packing and shipping that all needs to be taken into account. My estimates depend on the models supplies and some are easier to print than others. so for now I just ignore my $/unit volume cost on the site and give the prospective client a total based on their models and reality.

fester - I would agree also ,everything has to be taken into consideration. I also ignore my $/unit cost . Estimate are based on the parts and complexity .

dennish - One of the biggest reasons this site hasnt worked for me. I do enjoy MakeXYZ and have had a good deal of work come my way...Cant we say that MOST 3D Printers require fees that go beyond simply pressing print?
Each job requires a good deal of discussion and planning from my perspective.

davedelay - It isn't necessary to have everything available as a variable to costing. I believe it's up to the individual to spell that out or not on his profile. and make it a selling point.

erckgillis - If we standardize pricing it makes it easier on the customers to compare pricing. If we all have complex terms and conditions in our profiles with special cost that only come from discussions with the client about the differences of their models and or unique printers capabilities like dual materials or supports etc. They will never be able to cost shop...

carter - hmm I'm surprised that this hasn't been fixed 5 weeks after this thread. And that this isn't the first thread about it! it seems like a huge issue that smacks you in the face the second you make your first contact with a customer.
I emailed Nathan a week ago when i got my first job:

If i want to charge for weight plus print hour, how to I know this until after I have printed the object? you only let prices be set per cm3... what if they print a hollow object? what if they print a high rez object? opportunity cost of my printer use is much higher to me than cost of plastic. I just sent an invoice for $1.... not trying to rip you off, I just am new to printing and do not know how to fairly price.

Hey Carter,

Regarding pricing, as customers will be requesting quotes, you will be able to walk them through your pricing. if the part is hollow, you can explain that, if the request is high rez you can charge for and explain that too...
