Better Self Care
Undeniably the world has changed over the last eighteen months. For a start, regardless of who we are and where we each may be, we're all equally exposed to the ever-present, low-grade and persistent anxiety brought on by a pandemic that magnifies the level of anxiety over uncertainty that we face. In addition the personal circumstances of many of us have changed. In all this it becomes easy to lose track of the fact that we need to actively practice self care. That is sensible, but what does it actually mean?
At its most basic level taking care of yourself involves actively creating a life you don't feel the need to get away from.
Self-care means doing what makes you anxious now: doing a tough workout, setting boundaries in your life, learning to say "no", accepting that failure is also part of life, being honest with your self, being honest as well as kind with those around you.

The steps that lead to true self care involve:
- Being kind to others and our self
- Doing things that have real meaning instead of things we just "have to do"
- Defining boundaries for our self and others and learning to have clear tasks that lead to clear goals
- Accepting failure as part of a process and then learning and growing from it instead of using it as a stick to beat our self up with
- Actively, in a step-by-step way creating a life that reflects who we are and makes us feel happier and fulfilled instead of one that we need to escape from
- Accepting life as an adventure. It is never going to be perfect or stress-free or anxiety-free but if it is our own life we become its creators and active participants. Not its victims
There is a much deeper body of neuroscientific research that now backs why by slowly accepting these steps and actively working to make our life this way benefits us both mentally and physically. Helps our overall health, affects our longevity and helps us develop both inside and out. Admittedly it is always a balancing act. It requires constant vigilance and small adjustments. But a life that is being truly lived is never on autopilot. I really hope this helps. Stay safe out there.
