choice in new printer
I'm thinking of getting a second printer.

What are the advantages of a Delta style over the Cartesian style?

I need a multi material machine, if a machine is advertised as PLA/ABS capable can it do both with the same extruder or is a different extruder needed?

n23d - They look cool and take up less desk space. Some people have claimed they are faster and/or more accurate. I have not found that to be true. Also they use a Bowden tube system which in my experience results in more strings to clean up on printed parts.

the_robo_forge - Thanks duly noted, are there any brands out there you are loyal to ?

n23d - No brand loyalty.I have 3 printers form1+, deltaMaker and Robo3D. They all have advantages and disadvantages. I "like" the Robo3D the most. It is not the most beautiful or accurate however it is a work horse for me and the price point was very good.

the_robo_forge - Form 1 is sterolithagraph method right? Is it pretty reliable moving from print to print, is the process of setup tedious?

n23d - Yes Form1 is a sterolithography type printer. The software is quite easy to use and there are very few adjustments. The biggest hassle is the cleanup. The parts come out with little bumps all over them where the supports contact the part. The quality can be incredible when everything works. When it doesn't you end up with a blobby mess and a complex cleanup job. If a print fails you really need to clean the tank and filter or discard the resin. Failed parts tend to leave debris in the tank that will cause future failures. The operating cost is high in comparison to FDM printers Solvent, and other cleanup materials and resin. Basically if I do not need the quality I print FDM.

the_robo_forge - Good to know, thanks. I've been scanning Amazon and EBay for printer deals. Is there a third option for printer purchase you can recommend ?

n23d - That depends on how quick you want one. If you are willing to take a chance and wait a bit you should keep an eye on Kickstarter.com. I actually bought all of mine that way and got some very nice deals. It may take a while to get them however and they may not deliver everything as promised. One advantage is you may get very advanced tech way before anyone else. That is how I got my Form1 about $1000 less than list price with a warranty. New printers pop up every month or so. There are 3 or four active projects right now. The Moon Ray printer looked interesting its a DLP type a cousin to SLA. I already have the Form1 so I passed on it. If I did not have the Form1 I would give it real consideration.
