I will be speaking in a webinar at the end of this month. It is about the different style printers, what we use it for now, and what the future holds. Their is a possibility that I will do it in front of a live audience. They mentioned if I want to bring one of my machines and have it build something I could.
So, I started thinking of what can I make that will demo 3D Printing?
What do yall think?

- Do you want something functional or cute? Probably lots of little cute figurines on Thingiverse. For functional, maybe do a nut & bolt combo, I got one on my SD card from makerbot when I bought my machine, The fact that they actually work together was pretty amazing. I think functional is your best bet. Otherwise, it just looks like a trinket maker. Even try one of the kinematics bracelets by nervoussystems, it's just a bracelet but it prints with a bunch of little hinges in place that work quite well to make it fairly flexible. Not sure if it can print in an hour though.

- good ideas. The hour time crunch kinda sucks a little, because we all know that the cool prints are the longer ones.
The only idea that I had that was quick and simple was the chain links that makerbot did. Instead of doing it small, make it big enough that it takes an hour to print.

- That's a good one too! The only way currently known to man to build a chain already linked together!

- better make it a 55 min print, in case something goes haywire on the first try ;)
So I can take it off and show how right when it finishes I can grab it... IDK we will see

- Vases are always good for quick demos like that. When I speak, I like to take the cerberus333 tiki and print it as a vase. Crank up the speed and it can be done in an hour.

- I like it, the tiki can show the detail part of 3D Printing.
Thanks for all the help guys!

- no problem. Just don't run it too fast :) I've done it twice now where someone says 'how fast can it go' and I crank up the machine so fast that the fan can't fool the plastic fast enough. It does make for some good discussion on limitations of this tech though :)

- I think the bearing might be the one I will use. It is quick, and shows how something can be printed then actually used right away.
oddly enough I have never printed this part (I wanted to, but just never did)
I will print out a test before the show just to make sure no problems. This question might save me some time. Have any of yall tried to scale it down, has it affected the tolerances of the gears sticking together? If anything I might just edit the STL and not make it as tall and keep the Diameter.
Thanks again for everyone's input.

- Yes scaling affects the clearances. Use the thingiverse customizer app and adjust tolerances when scaling. You may have to iterate a couple of times
kabong
- You can easily print a Twisted Vase (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:153994 -- or any vase, for that matter) in one hour and it's pretty neat to watch if you print it in slic3r's spiral vase mode since it prints in one onbroken continuous motion.. at least once it's done with the base (example: https://vimeo.com/93693063).
toybuilder
- The folks at Deezmakers (Bukobot/Bukito printers) have been using the gear bearings but with no top/bottom solid layers or infills -- just the perimeter -- as demo/giveaway pieces. Prints really fast and when you're done, you have a printed-in-place functional piece. You might want to give that a try!

- I've updated the price calculator for 3d printing.

this F-22 is also pretty cool. you can scale and print without the base and missiles in less than an hour http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:106022
