printedsolid - I like to be able to print without support. Often when you understand the process, you can design parts to be printed without support (similar to how when you understand basic machining, you don't design unmachineable parts).

I have to balance the 'customer is always right' side of my brain with the 'but if you just asked them to do these 3 little things, it would be an easier and cheaper print'.

jms3dprinting - I try to educate the customer and offer suggestions if the part will be weak or non printable. Some have thanked me for it and others perhaps went elsewhere. I do think customer education is part of the deal and the total cost including support and removal must be factored in when quoting. The fixed cost per gram formula I use does not take all into account but I am willing to learn and turn down some jobs if too small.

When it comes to details of optimal orientation for the expected stresses and minimal build time/support I can generally make an educated judgement call.

As rapidtechnician said, there is a big difference between most DIY printers and industrial printers and most people do not realize that. Sometimes I think some DIY operators are convinced otherwise. Having both a Reprap of my own and a Stratasys machine I know that it takes a lot of effort to get my Reprap dialed in for different scenarios. In theory my Reprap can have better resolution because it's adjustable, but the reality is that my Reprap and most DIY's don't have the repeatbility of the Stratasys to make it worth it. Additionally, the Stratasys is capable of melting ABS at 270C into an environment of 75C whereas most repraps are melting material at 130C onto a *plate* that is 80 to 110C. Those process parameters alone give the Stratasys the upper hand when it comes to warping and layer adhesion.
