Hannah Slater invented a sewing thread
The invention of a sewing thread was probably the first invention to use cotton instead of linen, and it was likely created by Hannah Slater, a woman from Derbyshire, England. Before Slater, sewing thread had been made of linen, and she discovered that twisting two strands of cotton into one thread produced a smoother, stronger thread. This discovery sparked her interest in manufacturing thread, and she eventually developed a machine that would produce it.
Slater was initially employed by her father, Samuel Slater, as an indentured servant. She learned how to operate all of the machinery used to turn raw cotton into yarn. Since this industry was relatively new, there were frequent breakdowns, so Slater helped to fix and maintain the broken machinery.
Ruth Handler invented Barbie and Ken dolls
The invention of Barbie and Ken dolls was the brainchild of two friends, Ruth Handler and Elliot Matson. Both Handlers had experience in design and furniture making, and they decided to join forces to create the Barbie and Ken dolls. Ruth and Elliot Handler also teamed up with a friend who had become an expert in plastic products. They eventually incorporated Mattel and began producing toy dolls in 1945.
Handler had observed that her daughter played with paper dolls and acted out the future. This prompted her to develop a more realistic, three-dimensional doll that would appeal to girls. Handler modeled her doll after a doll she had seen in Switzerland. Handler also named the doll after her daughter, Barbara. The dolls were sold to consumers two years later.
Sybil Knight invented a dress shield
A dress shield is one of the most useful weapons in medieval times, but it isn't as effective as the sword and shield used by knights. In fact, the dress shield is not used for swordplay, but rather to protect one's dress from the elements. A dress shield is very effective in a wide range of situations, but is especially useful for defending one's dress in battle.
Katharine Graham invented a pantyhose undergarment
Katharine Graham invented a pant-slimming undergarment for women in 1902. The idea originated from a woman who wanted to wear more comfortable and slimming undergarments. She cut off the bottom thigh portion of a pair of panties and used her savings to make and market the product. She researched fabrics, patents, and trademark designs and built an empire.
