crowdy - Hi, first of all please mind that there are countless ideas that you come across on the Internet these days when it comes to adding blue to your locks. However, there are a few essential things to consider before you choose to dedicate the time and effort to the desired outcome. First things first, you need to come up with the shade that you are willing to pull off. Whether it is a contrasting tone or the one that bends – it is up to you. frank09 - That will depend on what color, or “level” of lightness on a scale of 1 to 10, one being jet black, 10 being platinum blonde, your hair is right now, and what the desired result is. Generally speaking, the darker your hair, the more of a red phase your hair will get as it gets lighter. Hair color generally only lifts 2 to 3 levels. So if you are level one, which is the darkest of any shade of haircolor, so jet black, blue black, brown black, etc., hair color may only get you up to about a three, which is still really dark. So if you want to be a light color, like a blonde, gold, or even some shades of red, you will have to use lightener. Also, if you do not want a warm undertone, like you do not want to be any shade of red, or see any red redness in your hair, even if your desired result is darker, like a dark Caramell, or cappuccino color, you actually have to lift high enough to remove the red undertone before you can deposit the color that you want. If there is slight redness, it can be toned out, but don’t expect it to last.
