Is there anyone way to print ABS filament on the Makerbot 5th Gen?
Hi fellow MakeXYZ'ers,

I was just wondering if there is any way to print ABS plastic on the Makerbot 5th Gen?

kstichno - Yes, I have a 5th gen MakerBot and primarily use ABS. You'll need to create a custom print profile where you're print speeds are much slower then the default PLA speeds, I use 30mm/s for most settings. I also incorporated a 200 watt heater to my build plate with a small controller and run it at 110C during print.

jwoozy - How do the prints turn out when you use ABS?

What kind of 200 watt heater did you get that has a temp controllers?

jwoozy - I can google the last question. Are there any issues with the ABS and printing with the smart extruder that I should watch out for, or be aware of?

kstichno - I haven't had any issues yet. My printer has been running on average 15-20 hours a day like this for the past 6 months. As long as you keep the outlines, insets, and infill speeds less than ~30mm/s, all preforms as expect with pla. Check out my makexyz profile for some pics of things I've done, as well as what my modified printer looks like. Print quality is as good as PLA, at least down to .150 layers. I haven't gone much lower yet. Send me a message when you get ready to give it a try and I can give you my print profile with additional explanation, like feedstock ratios and such.

anonymous2 - I don't think so that there is any way to print ABS filament on the Makerbot 5th Gen. And i am using this for a while but this kind of creativity i even did not think of doing. But you can check https://www.bestessays.com/ to get great quality content easily. I try to do this and later try to share with you its experience

mozhoven - Hello,

I'm new here and also embarrassingly resurrecting a 5 year old thread..

Anyway, I'm an educator (now stuck at home like the rest of us) and experimenting with ABS on my Makerbot to pass the time between online class sessions. I wondering if anyone would be willing to share there custom print profiles for ABS printing.

I've hot had much luck and can't find a complete set of parameters to implement on my own and am having abysmal results, specifically with the first print layer not adhearing to the raft (which is warped, surprise surprise) I've been spoiled by using PLA exclusively for 4 years and had no idea ABS was so finicky. Lesson learned. Anyway, I really need to print a few parts with it, so I'm hoping someone can help. Please PM me and I'll send you my email. Thank in advance folks!

maghy - I have a completely different printer. I think it’s better for you to get a different model, newer. In https://grademiners.com/ they wrote a report about the huge cost overruns and marriages in this model.

zorro - Yes, you're lucky there are sites like that. I can't find the right print shop for me, and it makes my work very difficult.

celine - Yes, it is possible to print ABS filament on the MakerBot 5th Gen 3D printer. However, The MakerBot 5th Gen does not have a built-in enclosure, so you would need to create or purchase an external enclosure to maintain a consistent and elevated temperature. https://mapquestdrivingdirections.app
