Martin Luther and Reformation
The events that took place many years ago regarding the Reformation of the Catholic Church by Martin Luther are still subjects of discussion today. Those events have shaped the history of the humanity in the opposite direction to which it was initially going. The objective of the following paper is to discuss the Reformation and the decisions that Martin Luther made that time.
The Reformation took place in the 16th century. It had a significant impact not only on the spiritual life of the society and the church but set the grounds for the development of further political, economic, and even moral development. However, the political movements and strategic decisions of the church were objectively planned that has led to the full control over the country by this institution. The church has played one of the most important roles during the Reformation. Martin Luther has changed the ethical attitude of the church and directed it in a right direction.
Before the Reformation, the church was pressured to change the teaching practices. It has misinterpreted the information from the Bible and taken money from poor. Besides, its priests were famous for having many women and being cruel and greedy. Once the church leaders all across the Europe have faced the truth that Reformation was inevitable, many of priests have decided to alter their behavior. They tried to follow the real will of God, as Martin Luther had declared. The financial abuse of Roman clergy was too heavy for German one that is why Luther’s ideas about grace and justification have faced significant support among intelligence and clergy in Germany. The selling of indulgences was an open act of getting money by the church while the latter mentioned were even given to Crusaders, who committed horrific crimes. Even though the Reformation was shaped by the politics, it was right to challenge the church due to what it did and how it abused its power.
It is obvious that Martin Luther should not have stopped the church from splitting up. First, all the mentioned power abuse was only growing as the priest came into possession of more goods and influences, which entitled them to continue being the body, which ‘granted access to Heaven’. Moreover, the split of the church has led to the development of the new religious belief that is known as modern Christianity. The theological discussions after the split have helped to reveal the right learning of the Bible. Moreover, this split had also economic incentives, as the mass movements in the Roman empire were hugely supported by politics. Germany supported Luther and wanted to run the country by its rule, but not to listen to the order and give all the profits to the church. Lord Frederick the Wise of Saxony was among the major supporters of Luther’s ideas. He understood that the Reformation was inevitable and politically wise to support it that was the chance to remain in power.
In conclusion, this is important to mention that the division of the church has led to the creation of two branches, which were known as Protestants and Lutherans. The Reformation and split had only positive outcomes. However, such decision has led to further discussion and challenges related to the explanation and interpretation of the Bible. People had an opportunity to study Bible from the other point of view without ‘terrain’ of the church and set new grounds for different political and economic development of Europe. However, Luther did not introduce a movement of real reform. He has started a religious revolution.
