Diablo Valley College hosts many different concerts. Music of different genres, including classic, jazz, baroque, renaissance, and modern, sounds in this institution. Moreover, DVC Philharmonic Orchestra plays the works of American composers, such as Aaron Copland. A masterful concert dedicated to Appalachian Spring which impressed the audience of the College is the primary focus of the following discussion.
On the third of October 2013, the members of DVC Philharmonic Orchestra, including former students, performed Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. The conductor was the college professor, Owen Lee. The visitors of the college could listen and enjoy Copland’s work in one of the music classrooms.
For the first time, Appalachian Spring was played in 1944 and became instantly famous. This piece includes thirteen parties and belongs to the chamber music. The composer wrote it for a ballet; however, the musicians of Diablo Valley College played only musical composition without ballet performance. The Library of Congress was the first place where the musical work was performed and had a great success. However, the DVC chamber orchestra also performed this composition well. It was an excellent performance which made the audience experience the brightest emotions. Furthermore, during the concert, the visitors were able to see genuine professionalism and mastery. Appalachian Spring was so perfect that all people listened carefully. Personally, I enjoyed the music. I would be grateful to experience those pleasant emotions during the future concerts. Moreover, I like the works of Copland. To my mind, the music of Appalachian Spring is one of his best achievements. I can claim that each orchestra member is a well-educated and talented musician because their performance was extremely impressive. They played well creating a well-coordinated piece of music. Hence, DVC Philharmonic Orchestra made Appalachian Spring sound pleasant and formidable. That experience boosted my desire to attend other DVC performances.
This work was composed in the 19th century, but it still belongs to the modern period of music life. Moreover, the musical form of Copland’s Appalachian Spring is the orchestral suite consisting of eight parts. The second section has Allegro tempo and started by the unison of the strings in A minor. This theme was quite assertive. It often appeared in different variations. The seventh part “Doppio Movimento” was calm and flowing. It included Shaker theme and its five variations. Solo clarinet played the theme taken from Edward D. Andrews Shaker melodies collection. The melody of a theme was lyrical with the well-marked climax. On the contrary, the tune of the seventh piece was sharper and more piercing. Moreover, both melodies had bright timbre.
The interpretation of DVC orchestra group was successfully delivered. It conveyed the emotional mood of the work. As a result, the audience could hear many beautiful sounds. Instrumentalists were reserved, and their bodies did not make unnecessary movements. All orchestra members looked perfect and elegant. The conductor had the orchestra under control, and his motions and gestures helped performers to feel the music better. Moreover, musicians played consistently in tune and no “wrong note” was in the concert. Dynamics of those two pieces had enough flexibility and variety; it changed according to composer’s idea. Therefore, some places of Allegro seemed loud enough. The tempo was precise and helped to achieve the desired characteristics of the music. The seventh part could be faster because it seemed rather slow. Appalachian Spring performed by the DVC Philharmonic Orchestra impressed the audience. People were attentive and concentrated during the whole concert.
The concerts in Diablo Valley College show great skills and accurate performance. They are marked with professionalism and devotion. Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland sounded appealing and inspired to come and enjoy such concerts again.
