Newbie Problem with simplification of mesh
Hey guys, as you know I ask a lot of "newbie questions" mainly because they are problems that I have fixed but wonder if there is always a better way out there to make life easier.

Question today is:

A really complex mesh with many faces on it. Majority of the time it is a stl that Im working with and they are triangles. What is the fastest way and easiest to cut down on the faces?

ashley@3dprintvancouver.com - Meshlab will do it, under Filters -> Remeshing, Simplification and Reconstruction. Don't ask me which of the hundred commands under that to use. I would normally do it in Rhino by importing the STL and then exporting with new settings.

vinnie90 - I pretty much have all the free programs that we all use.

I usually use meshlabs but your right there is so many different ones to choose from. I kinda wanted to see if yall knew the best one

elpulpo - I usually use Filters -> Remeshing, Simplification and ReconstructionQuadratic -> Edge Collapse Decimation and it seems to work for most purposes. You need to fiddle around with the checkboxes but I usually check anything that says "Preserve" and uncheck "Post simplification smoothing".

elpulpo - Oh! Far as the degree of decimation is concerned. It defaults to 50% of the current number of faces but you can set it at any number you like.

elpulpo - Oh! Yeah. If it's scan and some of the mesh has a higher density of points than the rest, do a subdivision loop first to even that out.

vinnie90 - Throwing out some big words ... lol

Could you demostrate that for me bro? like show some screen shots of before and after and when you need a subdivision loop thingy...

Not only help me out but everyone else here.

elpulpo - Erm... Ooohh Kay! :-)

There's a certain amount of giggery-pokery with this. Trial-and-error but I'll see what I can do. :-)
