Open source.......eek!
Guys. It is with great trepidation that I throw myself into the murky waters of Open Source. I've had my spiffy ( and proprietary ) little Up! Mni for around 15 months and, of late, I've taken to tinkering. I've added a digital temperature controller, designed a pre-extruder to help me squirt Ninjaflex, replaced the temperature switch so the build plate gets up to a healthy 90 degrees and added an after-market Recreus extruder. I use borosilicate and purple UHU instead of the crappy perfboard the manufacturer recommends. But it's not perfect!

SO! Next step is to swap out the control system for something Open Source. I've bought a complete RAMPS 1.4 system with 1/32 degree stepper drivers and Reprapdiscount controller board so I think I'm on the right track as regards 'lecktronix. Now I need to think about firmware and software...

Ah! Just one thing! I'm getting another printer and as much as possible, I want to be able to use the same software on both printers.

The new printer is the redoubtable Deltatrix! If you've not heard of it, I'd recommend having a look. BOY! Do you get a lot for your buck! Don't P*** on my bonfire. I'm already committed. Now, the Deltatrix uses a RAMPS-FD / Due running Octoprint. The figures 800mm/Sec and 5uM have been bandied about!

Would someone care to demystify all of this for me as I'm a humble electronics engineer and my head goes all wobbly when I have choices.

What I wanna know is, what's the best PC/Mac software for me to use? Can I run Octoprint on the Ramps 1.4? Do you have any other suggestions as regards other options? Do you foresee any problems with (up?)-grading the Mini?

Thanks guys, I know you'll give me your answers for the heart!

You're awesome!

defcon3d - Hey Andy, I cant resist P****** on the old bondfire..Haha!

There's a guy over in Switzerland that is an Engineer with a boatload of knowledge and experience in this industry.

About a year ago he was getting very disfranchised with a major consumer 3D Printing Co. in the industry. After a few years of tinkering with quality and reliability issues he redesigned the machine from the ground up to his specifications and higher standards...

Check your email. I will try to send you pics of the almost finished machine...
Its based on Core-xy and uses linear glides instead of rods... The stepper motors are all outside the build chamber. You know what that means? ;) This thing looks bulletproof...

A bunch of us are chomping at the bit to get it before he does something stupid and takes it to Indiegogo.

If your interested I'll get you his private google group and you can ask to join :)
