Simplify3D software
does anyone have this software? I got some questions about it.
1
elpulpo - Nope. Is it any good?

vinnie90 - The videos look pretty good.
2 things I like about it that I want to know more about.

1. Super easy break off support material, as well as placement and deletion of supports
2. Ability of .3 mm high infill and .1 mm high outside shell. in the same print

marcnicol - I've been using Simpiify3D for about 6 months and have been very happy with it. Definitely worrth the money just for the sparse infill option.

1. The support material comes very easily and is good on everything except flat surfaces. It can also be customised to suit your needs.

2. The sparse infill option is amazing. It also work for support material. I find it is faster to print at .16 shell with .32 infill than it is to print at .2 on both.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

ashley@3dprintvancouver.com - I use it also. Never looked back. Support is a dream and I use multiple processes on nearly every print, even if just for the first layer. Fire questions if you've got them.

printedsolid - I also use and recommend it. My booth at makerfaire this weekend was next to theirs. Too bad you didn't post this yesterday, I could have just over and done whisper down the lane for you.

The multiple process thing is just extremely powerful for optimizing your prints. Tool paths are are generally pretty good as well.

vinnie90 - All right thats what I like to hear...lol

I have a file that needs to be printed more than once. I sliced it on makerware. It said it will take about 6 hours....

I would really appreciate it if one of yall could at least just slice it on Simplify3D with the .2 shell and .3 infill and let me know what the time is.(They will be ran on a makerbot rep 2, if you needed that information)

I want to know if I should invest into this software for some up coming jobs.

necf - Three of my local 3D printing club members have it and it is on my list of things to do.

printedsolid - I can do that for you. Send me over your settings. How you want it plated, how you want it sliced through the depth (i.e. same layer height throughout vs changing at heights, etc).
Just checking here, but do you know you can also use any of the other open source / freeware slicers on your makerbot if you run the gcode through GPX afterwards.

artexmg - My two cents.

I have been using it for several months now ... i think more than 6, probably.

The software is OK for regular use and for default setups. I like the speed when slicing. But it lacks other features that, for instance, Repetier has (editing the G-Code is incredible missed or real time seeing the piece being created is mised as well!).

Also, when you want to really fine tune to get superb prints, it just breaks; it will slice wrongly, missing small parts of a piece, or not adding support, or not filling or .. name it.

If you do not modify the speed multiplier, or infill and keep right on the defaults, you are ok. But then, why not simple use Matter Control? it does way better at no cost.

If I know what I know now, I would pay $40, $50 but no more. It is over priced. Seriously, use Matter Control, it is great (I do not own or related to Matter Control :-) )
9 years, 7 months ago

bone - I switched from MatterControl to S3D, because I keep have the slicer fail in MatterControl. I tried using Repetier, but had other setting issues. S3D is the only software that works for me so far. Also, you can put one license of S3D on two computers, so that's $70 a computer. Not to bad if you can find another computer to put the other license on.

artexmg - hehe ... for me the money is the same, $140, as it comes from my same own pocket :-) Of course, if you find a friend who wants to share, perfect!

Do not take me wrong, I like S3D, but anytime I want to slice something complicated, it fails. I have not to move the automatic settings, or it just do not slice. That is why I think the price is not rigth, IMHO.

I usually gravitate between Repetier, MatterCotrol and Simplify 3D. The good thing about the first two is that you can choose different slicers ;-)

BTW, The new version of Matter Control allows you to slice using Cura, and their own slicer, which I like it a lot!

Repetier has evolved a lot as well, and the new version has a nicer UI.

But, as everything, it depends on everyone likes and dislikes ;-)

bone - I've used all those hosts and slicers in the past couple weeks, S3D still came out on top for me.

vinnie90 - I have used Cura, Slic3r, makerware, and even replicatorg. Makerware just works, no fancy tuning (for makerbots). It takes alot of time and headache to tweak other programs to work properly. However, if a program can offer me those two things that I could really use. Then I would invest some time working with it.

artexmg - @Vinnie90: Regarding your two questions,

1) The manually added support material is a nice feature, when it works :-)

Many times I had found that you cannot place the support material for tricky geometries. Sure, for a simple, flat roof, you can all support you want, wherever you want, but for a complex shell with intricate geometries, you cannot always set the support where you want, the software does not understand were to "hang" the column. What I had done is to move the piece around the bed or even rotate it until S3D understand what you want.

You can play with the settings to get the best compromise between support and easiness to clean the support. Of course, break PLA is easier than ABS ... and forget about a clean support for Nylon, Polycarbonate or Delrin :-)

Of course, you always can place your support in your models as part of the design. This is way better (apparently). If the model is not yours, then you still can add supports using Meshmixer (no cost!), and have complete control of what you are doing. ;-)

2) About using different settings for support, it cannot be done "out of the box". You can modify your slicing settings (infill, layer definition, etc) based on layers. I mean, you can have one, say infill 10% and layer 0.05 mm from layer 0 to layer 10, and then, change to infill 50% and layer 0.1 mm after layer 11 (actually, it is based on mm, not layers, but you can make the calculations by simple multiplication :-) ).

To accomplish what you want (assuming you have only one extruder) I imagine you could slice your piece in two, so you have the inner and the outer parts. Then, each piece could be sliced using different settings. Then, you could print both jobs in a single run. This way you will have two different infills, one single print.

However, you do not need S3D for doing this :-)

PS. I am NOT against buying S3D (or any other software - I am a programmer myself and I had paid for several licences of different 3D softwares, S3D among them), I am just sharing info I would've liked to known when I was buying, and no one seemed to have at that time ;-)

If you want, I can slice some piece for you using S3D so you can see how it will work in real life. Something I would've liked is if they had a test licence ... but they don't :-(

tinkerhaus - @artexmg - re: Delrin - I have a customer who is requesting it for a project we are working on. I have been researching and have not really found anyone having a lot of success with it. Can you talk a little about your experiences with it?
9 years, 7 months ago
1
artexmg - Not too much experience with Delrin, I just had chance to print once and it came well enough. I am waiting to finish some prints and have more free time to play with it and Polycarbonate. I think the key for playing with these materials is a good all metal hot end. I use E3D V6, with some mods.

For my only experience with Acetal, I used 240 degrees (little lower than Nylon) and 100 degrees on the bed. Not sure if these are the best values, but this is what I did and was good. Ah, also, super-slow speeds, like 25mm/seg. I understand that you have to dry the filament (just like Nylon) before use, or will have quallity issues.

Said that, I read that Delrin will release formaldehyde (carcinogenic) at high temperatures (+230) soooo ... better have a good air flow if you are going to try it for a project.

Cheers!

artexmg - Any time! Hopefully this weekend I would have time to give it another try. If so, I will post my results ;-)

Hey, I saw you have a Pegasus touch too ... have you tried the MakerJuice resin? it works amazing with Pegasus, at less than 50% cost of the "official" one! (it is just that I am very excited about it :-) ).
9 years, 7 months ago

tinkerhaus - I have not tried MakerJuice but you are not the first person to mention it. I have a few liters of the MadeSolid resin (which I helped beta test on the Form 1) but have not had a need to use it yet.

tinkerhaus - Which of their resins have you tried? The ones labeled "form1 compatible"?

artexmg - Wow, I answered before, but for some reason my post is not here. I think I forgot to click the reply bottom at the end :-)

Well, I used the G+, which is the standard one. It is really good. Just be careful not to leave the colored resin on the VAT for long time afterwards, you could stain it (I know for experience now!)

artexmg - I have to edit my original opinion about Simplify 3D ... some days ago I got a message of the new version (I have it installed in a Mac). This new version has many of the things I wanted. Still many other missing, but they are getting there. Now, I would say, I feel it still in the expensive side, but i believe I got enough value from the money I paid for the software ;-)

vinnie90 - Im still holding off on it. If I get another large job, then I will put that into my cost and purchase it.

diecast_dirtboy - If anyone is on the fence about purchasing it, its worth every penny. I use it with both my Rep 2s, and it works great! The overall deal lets you tune your machines like none of the other softwares, and G-code preview can be really helpful.
9 years, 6 months ago
0
artexmg - G-Code preview? does it have G-Code preview? it should be in the new release and I had missed? or you are talking about the simulation of the G-Code? thanks
9 years, 6 months ago
0
diecast_dirtboy - Guess I should have said simulation of G-code.
9 years, 6 months ago
0
artexmg - oh ... I was just so excited :-)

I really crave for having the capability to modify (within the app) the G-Code, like in Repetier. I know I can open the file in any editor, but nothing like having everything in one single place.

The developer commented that they used to have that capability in the past, but the decided to eliminate it in favor or other developments. I hope they get it back, will make it way better. That, and the capability of other infill patterns would make a better software than it is right now.

nyl0cke - How is the support for 2+ extruders?
9 years, 6 months ago
1
artexmg - Actually, I found it pretty good, as you can define different process to run at the same time, each process associated to a different extruder; or, you can define to separated a process by layers (actually it is by height, but you can do the math) and change toolsets.
9 years, 6 months ago

vinnie90 - different processes at the same time.....meaning both extruders extruding at the same time?

vinnie90 - it is $140 for two license. You cant just buy one.

So, if someone wants a license of it I will buy it and sell you the 2nd license for $70

nyl0cke - I'm looking at the site and it says $140 per license?
9 years, 6 months ago

nyl0cke - Okay, I'd be interested, but I need to wait until this weekend before I have enough funds to pay my half.
9 years, 6 months ago
0
vinnie90 - maybe that one license can be used twice. I will call tomorrow and see
9 years, 6 months ago
0
vinnie90 - Just talked to them. One license gives you the program on 2 different computers
9 years, 6 months ago
0
nyl0cke - Okay, so do you want to split the cost? I'll have enough in 2-3 days to pay my share.
9 years, 6 months ago
0
vinnie90 - That sounds good to me. Send me an email or message on here when you have the money. I will then buy it that day and probably do a paypal thing for the transfer of the money.
