elpulpo - Think Itchy pig might be referring to the "Here's a job for $75! If you accept it, you get the job!" messages that I've been receiving lately. I lost interest in those pretty quickly. The first two had already gone when I clicked on 'em and the third was waaaay to big for my build plate and too complex for the money. Is that what you meant, Itchy?

nathan - you can still price jobs. this is a secondary option for customers who don't want to go through the process of picking a printer.

imagine you knew little about 3D printing, picking, communicating, and negotiating with a "printer" would be overwhelming.

so: you're not losing the ability to price these jobs, as these customers wouldn't have ditched well before the quoting stage anyway.

also remember that we only keep changes that increase orders/$$ going through the system.

itchypigcreations - So what if we look at one of these request and come to the conclusion that more money is needed for the job etc.. How is that handled?
9 years, 5 months ago

nathan - if no one accepts the job, the customer has the option to contact everyone for custom quotes.

itchypigcreations - So who decides the pricing on your end and how do you come to that price? What's the formula?
I would just like to know so we all can be on the same page

nathan - it's an evolving formula. general rule is: part volume + an estimate of supports required.

raykholo - I accepted one of those jobs last week, it was for roughly $20 total for 2 parts and that was supposed to include shipping. That would have been a job done at cost before factoring in my time. Luckily the customer lives 10 minutes away and agreed to pick it up.

Nathan, there needs to be a fixed cost model based upon USPS' flat rate charges. In other words, you need to add $6 - $10 to your current calculations to account for shipping a small job and $13 - $14 for a large one.

You can look at exact prices here and multiply them by 1.15 to include your take. http://postcalc.usps.com

I don't mind the idea of being a print shop and not having to deal customer service, but in this interaction I still had to exchange messages twice to verify color preference (customer specified grey but closest I had was black) and specify that this was a local pick up arrangement.

These are things that need to be addressed in order to make this an expedited process that is mutually beneficial to customer and maker.
