Which 3D printer to buy? Round 2
Hey all,
I think we've talked about this before, but considering how fast things move in this wild and wonderful west, I figured it'd be worth an update.

I've had a Replicator 2 for a year or so now, and I'm thinking of adding a second to my arsenal.

I'm not in the market for a mini printer, or a form 1, etc. I want an FDM workhorse that's dependable and a good price.

If you were going to buy another printer, what would it be?

we3du - If I were you and I was happy with the Rep 2, why not get another one? :-)

vinnie90 - I would suggest to buy a printer that is simular to your as much as possible. That way you can keep slicing programs and setting the same and not worry about what machine your going to use and what setting work the best.

augustaht - @we3du: hehe good point. I guess I was just wondering if there was greener grass out there. Although I'm mostly happy with the replicator 2, it's not a husband or anything. That is, I wouldn't feel qualms ditching it for something better. :-)

Though I suppose that the devil you know > than the devil you don't.

@vinnie90: that is a really good point. I hadn't considered that.

sd3dprinting - We service printers from seven different manufacturers. Here is how I would rate them in order of preference:

1. Airwolf XL - Pros: reliable, easy to calibrate Cons: one nozzle, high vibration
2. Ordbot Hadron from Punchtec - Pros: reliable, fast Cons: difficult to change filament
3. ConnectXL from Punchtec - Pros: fast, large build Cons: poor electrical design
4. Flashforge Creator Pro - Pros: enclosed, ease of use Cons: small build, closed software
5. Printrbot Plus dual extrusion - Pros: large build, simple Cons: poor electrical design
6. Tricolor from RepRapPro - Pros: three extruders Cons: unstable build, difficult to calibrate
7. Replicator 2 from Makerbot - Pros: ease of use Cons: closed software, small build
8. MH3000 from ORD - Pros: up to four extruders Cons: nearly impossible to calibrate

raykholo - sd3d - talk to me about the poor electrical design of the Printrbot Plus. I used a single extruder model last year and am very curious what the issues you've seen are.

sd3dprinting - Issues so far with Printrbot Plus: bed frame arrived cracked, a replacement was shipped immediately. Bed cannot sustain temp above 90C during print. Second extruder relays thermistor value but will not heat at all. Belts arrived assembled very loose, requiring minor maintenance to print successfully. Probe thread pitch is way too large, making it a pain to calibrate.

See the above link to see Sintratec SLS machine. Need to buy one right away. Only 8 left at the introductory pricing. All of the makexyz community should see this machine. Brian Newnan

fabhappy - I was in the same boat not long ago. I picked up a FlashForge Creator X and am generally happy with it. However, I haven't had time to tweak ABS with it and generally it prints poorly. PLA prints are quite nice, but I miss the ability to remove the print bed. If I were to do it again, I would probably have bought another Replicator 2. I know MakerBot has fallen out of favor because of questionable practices, but my R2 has served me well for over 1000 hours of printing, and MakerCare has been super responsive with shipping me my replacement parts for free and no questions asked.

bassna - If it was me in your shoe's, I would get either a Powerspec pro 3d ($800 clone of a flashforge creator pro/rep2) or possibly go with the Flashforge. It really is a great workhorse, which is what you seem to be looking for. (Although that Powerspec 3d pro is also only $800 and I assume just as good, or close)
