I have designed a lamp base to hold lithopanes like -http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:74322 I wanted it to be small and interchangeable so it could be used as a light or as a display for your pictures,I will use mine as a bedside lamp as it gives of a nice low light. The lamp is a 6W Pure White Square 5730 SMD Led Panel Light Ceiling Light Lamp 700LM AC85-265V I purchased from ebay. update 15.10.14 there are more size options on the lithopane customiser now, the light fits panes 104mm wide so you need to use the square setting for shape, and large for size. This is an idea I have been playing with for a while now, I have printed a few lithopanes for myself and friends and wanted a way to display them. I started by looking for a light source that was close to the lithopane size and not to bright, on ebay I found 6W Pure White Square 5730 SMD Led Panel Light Ceiling Light Lamp 700LM AC85-265V and set about modifying them to a lamp. I removed the orignal front and designed a new one with Tinkercad,I changed the front as the hole in the center of the orignal front was too small and would not illuminate all of the picture. I then made the edge peice to hold the lithopane and attached it with super glue to the front. The cutout on the front goes to the top to help pull the lithopanes out (most of mine dont have the ring printed). I did not print the screw holes in the front plate as they are very small, when printed I used the back to mark the hole positions and then pilot drilled with a 1mm drill taking care not to go all the way through,I think the screws are number 4 x 1/2 " as they measure 2.8mm dia and 12.5mm long. I replaced the orignal cable grip on the rear of the lamp with the stand which has the grip built into it. The stand can be fitted with the orignal screws. I fitted the front so the cable grip was at 9 o clock when looking from the back. I fitted a lead to the lamp that had an inline switch just for ease of use when using as a bedside lamp. Before fitting test the lamp with your lithopanes for brightness,I print mine at 0.2 layer and 12 to 14 layes so mine come out around 3mm thick but some people might make theres thicker.(the slot at the front will take 4mm) If you find it a bit too bright as I did print and fit defuser in the back. My parts were printed In white ABS on a reprappro mono mendel with a 0.5mm nozzle, print 1 off each part as bellow. should be fine in PLA but not tested. Front -printed at 0.3 layer 50% fill with 4 solid bottom layes as I dont want infill on the lens area of the print Edge- printed at 0.2 layer 70% fill to get a good clean print defuser - printed at 0.3 layer at 100% fill as again dont want any infill patten to shine through the lithopane. Stand - printed at 0.2 layer 50% fill You will also need the 4 screws to fit the new front and some flex and a plug. This project involves a very small amount of electrics and the modification of a piece of lighting. I have run mine for several hours with no issues of heat in the front of the lamp, the rear aluminium part gets warm as its there as a heat sink. use at your own discretion. please feel free to make, copy, modify as you like but please dont sell it on. please feel free to ask any questions. hope you like it :)
