Not really a thing, but a simple technique to handle filament spools. This solution eliminates problems with dust and helps to keep moisture out of your plastic. Shown in the photo, I decided to run the filaments to my 3D Touch printer externally. This reduces the sharper filament bends you have to deal with if you put the spools on the spindles provided with the 3D Touch and BFB3000. So, it occured to me that instead of making new spindles or spool holders to mount them outside the printer, it might be possible to keep the filament (and the dessicant) inside the original plastic bag it comes in. I just cut a small hole in the bag and run the filament into the tubes that guide it to the printer's extruders, then stick the end of the tube into the hole in the bag and seal it up with some blue tape. It's not truly air-tight because the bags usually have a few tiny holes in them anyway (if you find them you can put a piece of tape over them), but it is much, much better than having your filament out in the open air. This technique means that the extruder drive of the printer must be strong enough to spin the spool in the plastic bag. But it really doesn't take much force to do that, mainly because the friction between the plastic bag and the tiny area of the spool rims that they rest on is very small. The 3D Touch has no problem pulling the filament off the spool and turning the spool. No worries about dust! Less worries about moisture! When you remove a filament you can work the filament back onto the spool by turning the spool from the outside of the bag. Grab the spool with one hand, slide the bag, bunching it up a bit in the opposite direction you want to turn the spool with the other hand, release the first hand and slide it in the same direction, grab again and turn it the other way -- not a great explanation, but the idea is to work the spool around using the bag sort of like gloves -- once you get the hang of it, it's easy. when the filament is wound back up on the spool, use a piece of tape or a clip to hold the end of the filament to the rim of the spool. Then seal the hole in the bag with tape for storage. The sad thing about this is there's nothing to print!
