A big W reproduced from a real-world wooden object. More detail on how this was created (including the digital repair of the break in the original wooden letter) are in my OpenSCAD book (http://www.amazon.com/OpenSCAD-3D-Printing-Al-Williams-ebook/dp/B00I6K19OM).My wife had a craft project going and had a wooden W that somehow broke. I took a cell phone picture of the piece with just a little of the break showing. In GIMP I erased the background, filled the object white and repaired the damage. Then Inkscape's tracer converted the object to a path by tracing. Import that as an SVG geometry into FreeCAD. There were 3 little "noise" paths which I deleted. Then I extruded the path to 5mm height and saved as STL. Did a netfabb repair "just in case" and then printed a test print at 33%. A "big" 80% print is under way now and looks good. Physical photo copies indeed!
