The corner clamp gets its vertical tension by clamping around the wooden plate and using the screw and captive nut to apply force to the top plate. The screw head does not need to be tight or flush for this to occur. It's horizontal stability is achieved by the screw through the top and bottom holes as well as the wooden build plate holes.The only way these could work any better would be if they had a spring in there somewhere - but then you're talking about even more height sacrificed from build area...
