If you have a regular NEMA17 or NEMA23 motor that you are not using you can create a GREAT horizontal filament spool base. The motor adds weight and stability to the spool, besides and most important, its RESISTANCE to rotation!! This way your spool never will be unwinded by a filament whiplash (specially the large brand new ones, that tends to unwind itselves) Just add some M4 and M3 screws, some M3 nuts and you are done. You just slide off the adapter to be able to insert little hole spool or make easily your own adapter editing the FreeCAD sources included. About the colors used to print, errr... Just printed with what was loaded on my printers at that time... There are two variants, the conical regular one, and what I call the 'cube mod' that is a modular design easier to print but it requires 4 more screws and nuts. I use both of them, but I printed more the cube mod because being modular it can take advantage of that surplus filament you can have around. Regular STLS are for NEMA23 Version. If you want a NEMA17 version just print instead the two NEMA17 named stl's. Anyway I recommend to use the NEMA23 version, it adds weight and requires more torque thus increasing performance. Of course the NEMA17 version is also a good performer. Just use what you have around. I use this kind of supports to feed filament to my printers through a PTFE tube directly to the extruder, this avoids the spool weight pending on the machine, increasing stability and giving you more freedom to manipulate/place your spools in addition of filament bending protection. If you use 1.75mm filament just get couple meters of 3mm inner PTFE tube and try it. I promise you'll never regret... The optional toolbox is also very handy, it even has an optional hinged top. TODO: Nothing. Original project goal surpassed. Happy unwinding!! Updates: UPDATE (10-SEP-2015): Enhanced hinge. UPDATE (9-SEP-2015): Added: shell to 38mm, shell to 50mm from 38mm. Increased the 14mm axis base to 30mm diameter for better fitting after filing the support material from the spool base. Added a toolbox top and a hinge to install it. Use M3 screws and wood screws to install the hinge, and a M3 30mm screw and a M3 nutlock for the hinge. UPDATE (7-SEP-2015): Added convenient NEMA17 STL's for the cube mod, the coil base and the cube mod top. The spool adapters remains compatible with both NEMA23 and NEMA17 versions. The NEMA17 version requires four M3 screws instead of four M4 screws. Amplified the base coil diameter to 140mm. There is no NEMA17 'cone version' at this moment. Added also STL's for an optional (or several) side tool boxes. Use the Cube mod stl with holes for each toolbox. UPDATE (5-SEP-2015): Introducing the 'Cube Mod' easier to print specially on ABS. A total of 8 M4 and 3 M3 nuts & bolts required. Updated STL's for a better fitting of nuts. Added an adapter to 50mm spools on top of the 30mm adapter, You choose what to use depending on your needs.
