I run a 'Design and 3D Print' service for the small scale manufacture of decorative or functional objects.
Puzzle designer - inventor of 'Superstrings' puzzle
3D printer enthusiast - built my own Mendel90 and 3DR printers from scratch using the eMaker Huxley.
Clinical terminologist - currently working at Clinithink
I have been designing puzzles for printing by commercial 3D printing services since 2008. I built my first printer in August 2011 and used it to print all the parts for my second printer, a Mendel90. This has a sturdier frame, a larger build area and a heated enclosure to prevent warping when printing larger parts.
I used the Mendel90 to print my third printer, a 3DR delta printer.
The Mendel90 is best for wide objects up to 140 mm tall.
The 3DR delta is best for narrow objects up to 330 mm tall.
In 2016, I built my fourth printer, an E3D BigBox which has xyz dimensions of 300 x 200 x 300 mm. It also has dual extrusion capability which greatly extends the kinds of model that can be printed.
I regularly print in several materials including PLA, ABS, Bridge nylon, PETG, woodfill and bronzefill. ABS is suitable for acetone vapour smoothing, which gives a fabulously shiny surface.
I sometimes print at 0.1 mm resolution but also use 0.15 or 0.2 mm layers which often gives the best compromise between surface quality and print time.
