First I want to say thanks to MakeALot for developing an awesome lithophane generator!! See the 360 lithophane he created that inspired me to make this and a link to the lithophane generator here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:663031 My daughter just loves the Little Mermaid. While she likes me to print other things for her, she keeps going back to asking me to print a little mermaid object. Well, there is surprising little that I can find out there in the way of little mermaid 3D objects. Thanks to MakeALot's lithophane generator, my daughter thinks that I have now printed the best thing ever! I went to google to find pictures and let her pick out three of them. I stitched them together using Photoshop Elements so that I would have a picture wide enough to do a 360 degree lithophane (This picture is in the gallery). I then used MakeALot's lithophane generator at his web site here: http://3dp.rocks/lithophane using the following settings: Max Size (MM) to 300 Thickness (MM) to 2 Vectors per Pixel to 5 Form to 360 solid shell I tried different "Vectors per Pixel" settings starting at 2 and going up to 5. At 2, the file was much smaller, but was also more jagged. I settled on 5 since it was the first level that looked smooth. At 52mb, the 5 vectors per pixel stl is about 4 times the size it would have been at 2. I Think that was partially due to this being cartoon images. I tried it with some photos and was able to get smooth images with a setting of 2. MakeALot had a good explanation of the vectors per pixel at his blog here: http://3dp.rocks/blog/ I used netfabb basic to repair the model so it hopefully will not give anyone issues. I was able to successfully slice it with Simplify3d and with Slic3r before repairing it though. I printed it with 2 shells, no infill, no layers on top or bottom, .2mm layer height.
