A rice mold for making Mario themed rice balls. I created these for use in bento boxes, which I've been blogging here: http://www.kellbot.com/category/bentoThese each use a little less than a 1/4 cup (dry) Japanese sushi rice.A modified version of this could be done on a Makerbot or 3D printer, if anyone wants to attempt it.Cut all parts from 1/4" acrylic sheet. Wash and dry thoroughly. The blank squares with notches are used to make the mold backing. The squares with goomba/flower outlines are laminated to form the walls of the mold. Using a wall piece as a guide, glue the "features" (goomba eyes, flower center, etc) to the backing pieces. Laminate the three wall pieces for each mold. It's important they fit together as seamlessly as possible so the rice doesn't get stuck.Place the backing up against the mold walls. Carefully glue the registration marks (rectangles on the edge of the backing) to the back of the mold. Be careful not to glue the backing itself to the mold.Prepare Japanese sushi rice. Place the mold and backing together and fill the mold with rice. Use one of the goomba / flower silhouettes leftover to press the rice into the mold.Flip the mold over and carefully remove the backing. Gently push the rice out of the mold.
