
I designed this compact Spool Holder with two key points in mind. The first being that it can be printed with no support; this means that it can be easily be produced by many different printers (both basic and the more advanced). The second point I had in mind was that it needed to not require any additional parts other than 3D printable plastic. I thought this would be a key design feature as if it say needed a skateboard bearing to work then many people would either not be able to make that part meaning they can't print the holder or they would have to spend some money to buy one. So to solve this common problem I searched around on thingiverse and found a compact bearing that would spin freely; and I came across this one: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:53451 I modified this well designed bearing in their customizer so that it would fit in my spool holder. So using this design and some basic work on Google Sketchup I created the stand. After making some designs I came up with the idea to use the hexagonal cut hole in the bearing along with the two stand pieces to form the stand. This means that I can now make other attachments with that hexagonal cut that can say go on top of a printer. This is extremely useful as it saves me printing whole new bearings which saves time and plastic. My 3D modelling work is not the best as this is probably the 10th thing I have ever designed and printed and the first I have ever uploaded to thingiverse but I hope you enjoy it. Make sure to read the instructions carefully before printing! To print this spool holder you will need to print two of the Side Stands and Bearings (one for each side of the spool), four of the Nuts and one Hex Beam. The print settings I used are 20% Infill, and 0.3 layer height. I used PLA plastic but I have not yet tried ABS.
