Completely printable x and y carriages for Solidoodle. Uses LM8UU bearings (x8) with parts clipping on for convenience and easy assembly/disassembly. Glides smoothly without lube and offers adjustment for x-axis belt tension. Original axis travel maintained. More room for extruder fans. Highly recommended to print as a spare at least. Should work for Solidoodle 2 and 3 with longer x-axis smooth rods. UPDATE New designs add cutout for M3 nut to be trapped on all belt attachment, as well as the extruder attachment. Eight needed in total. UPDATE 2 Slight tweaks added for strength. New parts have _2 suffix. Please refer to attached exploded view with colour coding. Apart from 8x LM8UU linear bearings, most other parts will be recycled. The only thing that may be needed are additional M3 bolts to tension belts. If you replaced other Solidoodle parts like the acrylic extruder, you will likely have these sitting around. If not, they are about 40c each from the hardware store and are very handy to have as spares in various lengths. Print the five parts with a high infill for strength. Depending on your printer calibration, you may want to scale up your flow rate for these parts to ensure a nice tight fit with the bearings. Unscrew and remove the extruder and extruder stepper. Undo the y-axis belts from the original carriage so they are dangling by the pulleys at the front and rear of the machine. Unscrew the two screws for the x-axis endstop (right hand carriage piece). Remove the standard carriage by loosening the all of the hose clamps on the y-axis smooth rods, sliding them back through the rear of the Solidoodle frame and then sliding the original carriage off at the front. Slide two LM8UU bearings (green) per side onto the original y-axis smooth rods, slide the rods forward again, realign them and secure the hose clamps. These rods stay in place like this from now on even if you need to disassemble the entire thing. You will likely need to destroy the original carriage pieces to retrieve the original x-axis 8mm smooth rods as they are glued in. I purchased 280mm long rods from the Solidoodle store (http://store.solidoodle.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=63_66&product_id=74) to avoid this. Rods can be longer if you are happy for them to be poking past the boundaries of the frame. Clip the right carriage piece (purple) to the right hand y-axis smooth rod and bearings (green). Remove the M5 bolt (pink) and belt idler pulley from the right hand side of the original carriage and reattach it to the new right carriage (purple) but upside down (nut underneath instead of on top). Reattach the x-axis endstop (important!) to the right hand carriage just as it was on the original piece. Unscrew the four M3 bolts holding the x-axis stepper motor (black) to the left hand side of the original carriage. Lower the stepper out and then insert it into the new left carriage (cyan). Reattach with the same M3 bolts. The stepper sits lower in the new left carriage piece, so the belt pulley must be removed and turned upside down (grub screw underneath teeth) for the belts to align. Clip the left carriage and stepper assembly onto the left y-axis smooth rod and bearings (green). Take your smooth x-axis rods (either recycled or new) and slide them from the outside through the left carriage (cyan) towards the right carriage (purple). Slide on two LM8UU bearings (green) into the middle of each when they are poking through enough. Continue to slide them towards the right carriage (purple) until they go through the matching holes and sit evenly. Secure them from underneath with M3 screws. There should be four left over from the original carriage assembly that held various bits. Clip the centre_front (yellow) and centre_rear (orange) pieces down onto the x-axis bearings (green). Now rotate them so the centre_top piece (red) can slot down from above, which pushes the front and rear pieces against the bearings, eliminating play in the assembly. Secure the top piece to the front and rear pieces with M3 bolts. Undo the two M3 bolts holding the x-axis belt to the remains of the old carriage. Pierce a small hole through the ends of the belts like how Solidoodle has done with both of the y-axis belts. An M3 bolt will need to go through each of these holes, inserting into the toothed side. Loop the x-axis belt around the left and right pulleys on the new carriage and then start to thread in the M3 bolts to the holes in the centre_top piece (red) to attach and then tension the belt. The x-axis is now complete and should slide nicely from left to right. Attach both of the y-axis belts in the same way. Getting the tension correct on these is tricky. If you are having trouble (carriage hard to move or circles printing as ovals), refer to the following Solidoodle video: http://vimeo.com/55031028 Even without lubing the smooth rods, my printer is gliding nicely and printing nice, round circles. Dimensions in mm. Happy printing!
