Now Available on Shapeways! ––– I love Angus's Fennec Fox Ring, but when I printed it, it came out with a few defects and my Replicator 2 with MakerWare Software didn't cope well printing the ears, so I've fixed up the model to work better. It's been totally rebuilt in blender with a thinner ring, and with the fox head brought in a little closer to the finger and moved down so the chin is at the same level as the bottom of the ring. The ring itself is a bit thinner and much less faceted, which looks great printed in transparent filament. The ears were evened out so they are the same height and some of the asymmetries were improved. The ears were a particular focus, with the facets adjusted to catch light in their subtle flat planes along the grain of the print. Infill and supports are unnecessary, so it prints a bit quicker than the original too - about 20 mins on a Replicator 2. Also note the ring is sized different to Angus's version. Sizing: Printed at 100% the inside diameter of the ring is 16.2mm, which converts to these international ring sizes: Scale as appropriate before printing to get the right size!Original Version: Print in the usual way, turn on supports and raft - the bottom edge of the ring is not flat, so I haven't tried without a raft. Version 2: I recommend printing at the finest recommended layer height your printer can do. Print with 4 walls and 0% infill. On FDM printers like the Makerbot Replicator 2 I found either a raft or supports are required to keep the ring from peeling off the platform, but with version 2 supports and raft together are unnecessary unless your printer has a difficult time with overhangs - the most severe being roughly 22 degrees under the chin. Printing with the makerware default 2 walls wont print much quicker than 4 due to minimum layer time once above the ring. I recommend Makerbot brand natural PLA filament. I've tried printing with faberdashery jade green and the results were rougher and a bit less comfortable. I haven't tried any other colors from Makerbot or Faberdashery yet, but I'm impressed with the quality difference between Makerbot and Faberdashery. I plan to stick with Makerbot filament in the future. Blender Notes: If you're editing the blender source file, make sure to leave Fennec Fox Ring and only that selected as the active object in object mode before exporting your stl. This object has the boolean union modifier which combines the face and ring in to the final printable object without any intersections which can glitch out some slicer software.
