Bothered about the always dropping filter i `ve tried to get rid from the stupid suction cups. Before printing helmets for my fish, i decided to to go this way. Suction cups get hard with the time or get under layered or rough by algae. Finally you have to buy new ones from time to time. Suction cup producers get rich with this. The solution for me are now Neodymium magnets. Those where you can tow a car with ;) So i made adapters for the filter and a carriage unit for the magnets outside. The project is not developed to the finish and may not fit to your filter, but sure an inspiration for your own needs. Previous Thoughts: I ve chosen the natural PLA because i don´t know if ABS emits hazard parts for the fish. On the other hand i don`t know if PLA gets diluted by the fish tank water on long term. The magnets will rust under water, so i embedded them in silicone. Maybe to print them in closed, or mold them in a resin may be better. At least all materials used inside had to be fish-freindly and not to be hazardous for their environment. Finally the magnet carrier outside is needed to prevent the single magnets smashing together when removing the filter. This could be very painful and hurt your fingers hard. Neodymium magnets are no toys for children!! I `ve used Neodymium magnets with 15mm diameter and 8 mm height. They can carry 6,5 kg each. The fish tank screen reduces the force but smaller magnets will do it too. Think mine are a bit over sized. While fixing the Filter in the tank you have to take care that the magnets didn´t smash the glass if you leave them drop on it. :( Hold the carrier and let it slowly come. Anyway, the Eheim pickup is designed to left in the tank and only the filter element is for sliding out the base. The adapters holes for the magnets are slightly bigger than the magnets to have space for a resin. The holes in the carrier are made to clamp the magnets without glue. (i know meanwhile that designing a hole and printing it out are two different worlds) While assembling the magnets take care for the polarity of the pairs in the filter and the carrier. I tested it one magnet kept in my fist moving over the other. Take care, the magnets can smash quickly together and shiver or will hurt you badly. Never place the carriage unit directly on the filter, you will not be able to loose it without destroy something. Always test it with a table or other piece of wood in between. Print all parts with pointing the magnet holes at the top. The Adapters from the top and bottom of the filter have different diameters.
