I wanted a fast Thunderbolt SSD but was not satisfied with the all-in-one options so I built a modular solution. This is a sled for a bare 2.5" form factor hard disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD) mounted on a Seagate Backup Plus Portable Thunderbolt Adapter (STAE128). Blackmagicdesign's Disk Speed Test reports a 350MB/s write and 380MB/s read speeds from my late 2013 13" MacBook Pro. It took seven iterations but the fit is now suitably snug providing support to the bare drive and leaving much of the metal casing of the drive exposed and available for air cooling. Also the LaCie is not bus powered ... must be plugged into the wall and it has a fan that emits sound. The OpenSCAD file is included so you can make your own tweaks easily.
