I designed this mouthpiece to give me a nice edgy sound, punchy but still mellow enough for a jazz big-band. It about a 1.7mm tip opening, average lay length. I designed the rather novel reed clamping system as well, which allows rapid reed change mid-concert! I've made a couple of iterations on this project, and had the mouthpiece itself laser-sintered in stainless steel. It now plays REALLY well, and have used it in several jazz concerts. Surprisingly, the ABS plastic version printed on the Makerbot sounds as good as the stainless steel sintered one. This one was printed at 50% fill and using raft and break-away support. Not sure how durable it is at this density, might try one at 100% fill. There is a fair bit of cleaning up to do on the reed table. Ideally, you'll need some fine sandpaper on a piece of flat glass and then holding the piece flat against it, gradually polish the reed table of the piece until all the raft marks disappear. Then, gradually work the facing out to the tip, making sure to finish it off with about 1.6 to 1.8mm tip opening. Persevere, after about 20 minutes this one played like a dream, from bottom Bb right up to altissimo C! Recording is included below. I'm obviously not playing soprano and alto at the same time, its an overdub;-)You'll need to cut a small square of 1.5mm rubber to go in the ligature clamp. The lever then drives over-centre and provides the clamping action. I think its a really neat idea, and lets you change a reed very quickly. I probably should have patented this, but there you go you've all got it for free!I'm also working on the soprano and tenor versions..... (end July hopefully). If anyone makes this piece, gets it to play and likes it, I'd love to hear from you (email below). Thanks, have fun![email protected]/* <![CDATA[ */!function(t,e,r,n,c,a,p){try{t=document.currentScript||function(){for(t=document.getElementsByTagName('script'),e=t.length;e--;)if(t[e].getAttribute('data-cfhash'))return t[e]}();if(t&&(c=t.previousSibling)){p=t.parentNode;if(a=c.getAttribute('data-cfemail')){for(e='',r='0x'+a.substr(0,2)|0,n=2;a.length-n;n+=2)e+='%'+('0'+('0x'+a.substr(n,2)^r).toString(16)).slice(-2);p.replaceChild(document.createTextNode(decodeURIComponent(e)),c)}p.removeChild(t)}}catch(u){}}()/* ]]> */Revisions: A2 - bore opened 0.5mm, was too tight on cork. Reinforcement added to avoid plastic version splitting when fitting to cork. Table added to give stability to ligature and retain it. Rubber insert can now be deleted.
