On the Greenpower GpSpeed controller the inductors were air cored. Winding them by hand and removing them from a former was very tricky. This coil former supports the coil on the PCB and provides a HEX hole to allow an Allen key T bar to be used as a handle to aid winding. No doubt the design can be improved, the included STEP file may make this easier.1) Calibrate your printer for dimensions 2) Print 1 of each STL file Download the STEP files and modify as required. Upload your modified files into Thingiverse. Background This part is designed to support the large hand wound inductor on the PCB. It also aids winding by not having to remove the inductor from a former. Ideally print in ABS. As the adjacent capacitor has a maximum working temperature of 85 C. Feel that whilst PLA might get a little soft at the absolute maximum, in fact it should not get that warm. To assist with temperature performance, Kapton tape is wound over the former in one wrap. The first tight bend in the wire is placed at the top of the former and another layer of Kapton tape used to hold the wire in place for handling. Support the wire well, whilst twisting the Allen T bar to wind neat coils. Depending on: Material shrinkage How well your printer manages dimensions Excess material i.e Blobs, strings etc. you might need to clean out the HEX form. Huxley #710 is pretty well calibrated and needed very little clean up. Follow instructions in build manual of GpSpeed for cleaning Polyamide insulator from the copper wire to allow soldering to PCB.
