I am using a box-frame type Prusa i3 printer and was looking for the best place where to mount my new Smart LCD controller. From a functional point of view, I would like to have at the top right of the i3 box frame, just above the RAMPS. But I also like to keep my printer as compact as possible, and having an LCD controller stick out makes it cumbersome to carry around and also bears the risk of damaging it by hitting it unintentionally. So the aim of this project is to construct a sturdy double hinged frame which allows to firmly hold the LCD controller in the desired operating position when using the printer, and to stow it away behind the frame when it's not needed. The project consists of the LCD frame as such and a strong double hinge mechanism. Both frame and hinge mechanism can also be used independently, i.e. if the Smart LCD Controller is to be mounted in a fixed position, the hinge is not needed, and the hinge mechanism alone could well also be useful for flexibly mounting devices other than that particular controller. The Smart LCD Controller is inserted into frame part and fastened on it by means of four M3x10 screws. The hinge mechanism can be mounted on either side onto the LCD frame. The hinge axes are M4 screws which are tightened with a spring and a Nyloc nut, as to allow rotation while maintaining enough pressure to keep the frame solidly in place. The printer-side hinge also has a locking mechanism to restrict the rotation between 0 and 90 degrees. Also grooves at 0 and 90 degrees cause the hinge to snap precisely into place at the two end positions. The provided SCAD file is fully parametrized, so that it can be easily modified to particular needs, if necessary. Separate STL files are provided for the frame and the hinge parts. Left and right side versions of the hinge are provided - use the one that fits the location of the LCD on you printer. Update 2015-01-08: I just uploaded a follow-up project on this which provides the same functionality for the 12864 Full Graphics LCD Controller. Update 2015-02-21: I just uploaded an additional smaller square version of the hinge. this might be useful for situations where only little space is available for mounting the hinge. Print the frame part and either the left or the right mounting version of the hinge assembly - depending where and in which positions you plan to install the LCD controller. Before inserting the LCD controller into the frame, make sure that there the male pin headers above the 2004 LCD do not stick out more than is needed for the solder joints - so cut off any extra length. In order to have the reset button accessible from the outside, I inserted from the inside through the corresponding hole a nylon M5x5 screw for which I had filed down the screw head to about 0.5mm. For mounting the hinges, you'll need and for mounting the LCD frame to the printer's box frame, I used 4 small 3x16mm wood screws. The LCD controller is fixated in the LCD frame by 4 M3x6 screws. I printed the plastic parts from 3mm ABS filament on my DIY Prusa i3, using a 0.4mm nozzle with 0.56mm extrusion width and 0.25 layer height. I print on a clear mirror without Kapton tape, but thoroughly cleaned with acetone first and then with double concentrated lemon juice.
