We developed a box with a stand to repackage the PlayStation 3 Eye camera for the tracking purposes in a seated augmented reality setup. The box is equipped with a pocket for an USB-B socket and with two holes for RCA sockets for the camera shutter synchronization. We use two PS3 eye cameras to track our Light Chisel 6 degrees of freedom interaction tool in a seated augmented reality setup. For more details on our Light Chisel project, see the project site: http://dcgi.felk.cvut.cz/projects/lightchisel/ You may as well print the Light Chisel on your printer: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:820765 You may need to build a pair of infrared cameras for head tracking: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:820866 The electronics board is held inside the box by the original screws and by two additional M3 screws. The box is screwed to the holder by additional 4 M3 screws. The PS3 Eye cameras may be modified for synchronization. You need to access the VSYNC and FSIN pins. You will find more details on the following two web pages: http://nuigroup.com/forums/viewthread/12445/ Step 9 - modifying the PS3 eye camera: http://www.instructables.com/id/The-EyeWriter-20 To not break the printed board, we usually epoxy a piece of a blank copper clad board onto the PS3 printed board at the spot where there are no components and we use these newly added pieces as soldering points for the synchronization cables going to the RCA connectors. We then connect these soldering points to the vias on the PS3 board using a thin magnet wire. We then put a dab of the epoxy onto the soldered vias to avoid damage of the PS3 board by caused by tearing the soldering point out of the PS3 board. To avoid a damage of the camera circuit, we added a protection circuit USB6B1 from ST micro onto the camera synchronization lines: http://www.st.com/st-web-ui/static/active/en/resource/technical/document/datasheet/CD00001361.pdf We also recommend to put clamp on ferrite beads on both ends of the camera synchronization cable.
