I realize that the scan isn't much and it isn't printable, but I wanted to share it because it has an interesting feature: All of the scan data which projects below the flat plane is actually underwater. Yellowstone's crystal clear water makes it possible to scan below the water surface using photogrammetry. The scan would have been improved by better lighting (an overcast day would have been better), a polarizing filter (to reduce the reflections on the water) and better access (park visitors are restricted to a boardwalk on one side of the pool). This technique has great promise because it provides a non-intrusive way to study and document these very delicate and ever changing features. This pool has been greatly altered by visitors throwing objects into it. Having a record of the under water geometry could aid the conservation efforts. On a technical note it is interesting to contemplate what effect water's different index of refraction has on the geometry produced by the scanning. Even a perfect scan would probably not be geometrically accurate, but would be effective for documenting change over time. We talked about this and lots more cool stuff on the 3D Printing Today podcast available on iTunes, or Stitcher radio learn more at http://www.threedprintingtoday.com/
