anyone have experience with 3d scanners?
i would like to be able to 3d print something, then add super sculpy(kind of like modeling clay) to it, then shape & sculpt it, then 3d scan the modified object, then print the modified object. there are things i could sculpt in seconds in real life that would take a very long time to do in CAD (my preferred design software). i do not have the time right now to invest in learning a more organic design program, nor to tackle a diy 3d scanner (unless it is super well documented/easy). does anyone have experience with both diy 3d scanners and store-bought ones? or any recommendations?

p.s. high resolution is what im after!

elpulpo - Hey there. What kinda size are we talking? If it's less than 7" x 9", a Matter and Form turntable scanner will do the job for you. It'll probably take 20 scans to get resolution you'd be happy with and really is best for convex shapes. You might need to take several sets of scans at different orientations and combine them in the M&F software before you get an acceptable scan. So all-in-all, it could take a couple of days to get a scan and your PC/Mac will need to be connected to the scanner when you're scanning. It's certainly the cheapest way I've got to do a scan of that size and the highest resolution I have. You can forget anything of the Kinect / Structure / 3DS Sense ilk. They just won't give you any decent results for small objects. Might be worth looking into the Einscan structured light turntable scanner as it's pretty good value for money. Beyond that, things begin to get expensive, like Artec, David etc. One other option is to go the photogrammetry route - Taking around 60 photo's around the subject and crunching them into a scan. The software is pretty costly but there are one or two free online and demo versions. When you say "high resolution" what are you looking for? 1mm is easy and cheap. 0.1mm isn't and 0.01mm is getting hairy expensive. Hope this helps as a first-pass. Cheers, AndyL
