How to approach a full house renovation (down to the studs) in Markham

I live in Markham and want to renovate our entire house. We are talking a full renovation. Everything from driveway, basement and both main and upstairs floors. New kitchen, stairs, etc. The house is approximately 2400 square feet, with 1200 sq feet of basement.
I also would like to add an extension, if possible, to our upstairs floor (a bedroom with 3pc washroom). I like the look of the house from the outside, and fear I will ruin the structure and overall curb appeal by adding an extension.
I'm not even sure where to start or how to approach this. I really don't want to do the reno in bits and pieces.
My biggest concern is finding a contractor who ends up doing a sub par job. Where do I start? Who should I talk to? What kind of budget is realistic for a project like this? What's the timeline?
Have you done something like this? Know anyone who has? Any contractor recommendations? Should I work with a designer?
