Inception was written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The action is set in the nearest future. Even though the movie does not give a precise time frame, the technologies suggest that it is very close to the present time. In Inception, the main characters fabulously portray common people of that time. They are brilliant scientists, creative youths, dreamers, and wealthy owners of gigantic corporations. In the movie, all these people interact with each other. Each character, however, is lonely. In a way, it is a very common image of our time. The individualistic nature of people today is so praised that they are scared to ask for help. Everyday struggles are fought individually. Each character in Inception is pursuing their own goals. They risk their lives for the sake of money, power, and wealth. Only Cobb, a lonely father, dreams about a timeless treasure, which is reunion with his children. Cobb has a slight hope that family as a primary value still exists.
Inception is a very symbolic movie. It shows the true power of time. People’s imagination here is used as a tool for mind games. Dreams are playgrounds for thieves. Reality becomes a blurry line between sleep and wake. This all symbolizes people of the time who are lost between risking it all for their dreams and remaining materialistic cowards. The movie does not give answers to which option is better but rather makes the characters equally miserable in their struggle.
The problem of the main character of the movie, Cobb, is too much dreaming. His imagination is so powerful that it builds unbelievable places, happy moments, and stories. However, at a certain point, he is not sure if it is his memory or not. These dreams settle dangerous ideas in the mind of his wife. She becomes obsessed with living within their dreams. As she commits a suicide, the plot reaches the major struggle of Cobb. He does not believe in dreams anymore. He wants to stay firm on the ground and come back to his kids. His story concludes with the idea that dreams should have limits. Otherwise, tragedy is inevitable.
Despite the fact that society may be cruel and destructive, the green light of hope remains. Misfortunes and challenges show that time is a valuable gift that each person has to appreciate most. In order to truly enjoy the given time, the characters have to fight with their own demons of greed, hatred or lies. Inception emphasizes very common behavior of the people of this time.
In the lives of the main characters, anyone can find their own struggles and dreams. In the course of time, choices change but struggles remain the same. Fortune favors the brave, which is portrayed through the life of Cobb. Greedy intentions of some people make them powerless, as it happens to Saito.
In conclusion, Inception is a movie of the age of loneliness. It is a time of many choices but few virtues. Very few people prove to be loyal, honest, and kind. However, for centuries, these values have proved to be the most influential and life-changing. History is a great teacher but its students learn very slowly. Therefore, the same lessons seem to be repeated often. Society changes with time; however, the rules of nature remain the same.
