ivanpope - I've got an Ultimaker 2 for sale in the UK - it's such a lovely machine. I've talked to a lot of Makerbot owners who are fundamentally unhappy with the machines, but I've never met an unhappy Ultimaker owner. They are lovely.

elpulpo - I've heard nothing but good about the Ultimaker 2. More than I can say for Makerbot who seem to have launched their most recent product lines rather prematurely. If I had the cash I'd snap up Ivan's Ultimaker while I had the chance.

vinnie90 - I never had a Ultimaker. I have seen many vids of them. Only think I can deduce from the videos are that they seam louder than the makerbots.

Let us know your choice in what you buy and why. I think we could all benefit from that data.

nyl0cke - The reason you'd get the impression that the Ultimaker is louder is most likely from the wooden frame. I've noticed the wooden printers are significantly louder than their printed counterparts. The wood amplifies the sound a bit more it seems.

As far as printers, Ultimaker is one of the best in the realm of preassembled open source Cartesian 3D printers. It's my favorite Cartesian design, and arguably one of the best possible designs in terms of speed and accuracy. MakerGear makes some pretty nice printers too. I'm a strong supporter of open source printing, and so I really can't recommend anything newer than the Replicator 1 from Makerbot.
