Does anyone know how the early settlers / pioneers would have fought off garden pests beyond simply picking bugs and eggs off manually? I plant marigolds and basil to help in the war, but my broccoli got hammered this year. I’m asking about remedies that would qualify as real preparedness / survival gardening methods not requiring commercial products. If I could grow the type of tree that makes Neem oil, I would use that. But since I can’t, I’m wondering what survival gardening approaches others use for pests that don’t require a trip to the store that probably wouldn’t be open in a real SHTF situation.

ace864 - Picking bugs manually from plants takes too much time, and it’s pointless. Bugs will be back any time soon. Also, I suggest you avoid spreading poison around your plants. If you are growing some fruits, veggies, and berries. After eating those foods, you might get an allergic reaction. I’ve already faced this issue, and I wouldn’t recommend someone to repeat my experience. The best thing you can do is calling up some professionals in this field.
