ABS vs PLA
I have 3 kids at home so always mindful of the microparticles the 3d printers emit, whats everyone's current views on using ABS around children vs PLA?

elpulpo - G'day Christopher,

I ate mud and caterpillars when I was a kid and it never did me any harm. The tracks pinched my tongue on one occasion but other than that....

Caterpillar. Get it?? No? OK. Moving on...

My workshop is totally separate from my home but I've run ABS in a printer in my house before I didn't worry me then and it wouldn't worry me at all now.

TBH, I think it comes down to quality against quantity of life. If you want to worry yourself into an early grave about any little thing that could cause you or your loved ones harm in today's world, you wouldn't sunbake on the beach or drink from a styrofoam cup, much less run a 3D printer in your house. If you're in the enviable position of running it 24/7 then you can probably afford to install an extraction system, HEPA filter or whatever for peace-of-mind. If you're really worried, get a canary, keep it in the same room as the printer. If it dies, start worrying. :-)

I have a mate in Melb. May put him in touch with you.

Cheers!

nyl0cke - I did a bit of looking around. The worst thing I could find where they did actual studies was with an injection molding factory dealing with ABS. The workers work in the presence of these fumes probably 50-70 hours a week for years, and the only thing they found different from them and the corporate workers was a slight (very slight) decrease in sense of smell.

And to give you context on nano particles, printing ABS is no worse than if you were to cook on your stovetop.

evanalmighty - Some people are sensitive to the fume that ABS gives off. Other than that I'm not aware of any grave danger with ABS. PLA is corn based and is non toxic. As long as you have adequate ventilation or containment you should be ok.

elpulpo - @paeonius. My mate is just yer average Pom home brewer with a taste for DIY but I'm sure he'd find some way to enhance the lives of his family with some 3D printed do-dah or other. :-)
