Where do you buy your plastic?
I used to get matterhackers. They were super fast and cheap. However, the last 3 spools were crap and it really slowed me down. 2 of the 3 spools were the "pro" series. I cant get those things to print at all.

I decided to go back to makerbot. I really LOVE the plastic (ABS and PLA) I never had a problem printing with it. I find that it really looks and feels good too. However, Makerbot sucks at support and shipping things you buy. Almost every order I have to call them and seem to never see that I ordered. They are nice and give me free stuff to keep me happy, but the fact is when I order the plastic I need it now.

What other companies do you recommend that I should buy ABS and PLA from? Im not worried about price too much, I am more or less worried about it printing right and super quick shipping.

mkapras - That's disappointing to hear - I just order 2 rolls or PRO from them!

I've used makergeeks.com - no problems with their stuff... yet! I always hear people rave about toybuilderlabs.com but I haven't used them myself.

vinnie90 - I noticed they changed the Pro pictures to a different spool. So it might be a new supplier. I tried calling earlier this morning and they didnt answer.

I hope it all works for you, it has been 6 months since I ordered last from them

mkapras - I just ran through 3 spools of their basic PLA for a recent project without any issues so I figured I would try some of their PRO stuff. We shall see...

nyl0cke - IC3D makes some nice filament, just don't order off of amazon, they sent me the wrong color ABS :/ I've got green and blue 3mm ABS from them and it's REAL nice. Another good supplier is Ultimachine, they have a ton of colors and plastics (polycarbonate, ABS, PLA, PVA, HIPS) all real nice stuff.

sjh7132 - I mostly use MatterHackers. I think the key to making any PLA work is to get the temperature right. These are what I use;
Makerbot - 230 -235C
MatterHackers (normal) - 210 [glow in the dark 200 - 205C]
MatterHackers (pro) - 215

vinnie90 - thanks for giving the temperatures. I will try the 215 when the red pro pla gets here. I decided to try them one more time.

I love matterhackers because they are so fricken quick!!!

Just to throw my numbers out there Makerbot pla 230c, matterhacker glow in dark 190c

sjh7132 - Vinnie90 I probably should have made it clear, I only have one spool of the pro on the new spools, and that seemed to work better at 210. The old pro was definitely 215. With a sample of 1, I'm not so sure about the new stuff. I use the cheap stuff for most of my projects.

sd3dprinting - We have been liking IC3D for 3mm ABS as well. Very consistent spool to spool; no problems with Amazon prime as of yet and loving the cheap overnight shipping option.

coberdas - I get abs from onlinefilament.com and PLA from deltamaker on amazon. Just as good as Makerbot but $10 less. Tied other and nothing has been better than these 3 brands. ABS from toybuilderlabs.com was bad for me. I have CTC printer with enclosure.

vinnie90 - I bought some matterhackers pro series to give it one last try. I bought a red and silver. The red looked sketchy at first...the "fill in" layers we completely filled in mostly but had a couple of parts where the lines had very little gaps. This happened for the 2 layers, after that I never had the problem again.

I have been printing almost 24 hours with it.....everything looks perfect.

Thanks for all the help guys

defcon3d - Toybuilderlabs.com has good filament. Joseph Chiu from Toy builders is in one of my Google Groups. The guy is great. The company is very responsive to any issues and will give spot on advice as far as temps. and settings for plastics.

This place not only sells filament but Joseph is a maker too. He's brings a lot of knowledge and experience to this field. He can "talk the talk" but also "walks the walk."

You can also buy his filament through Amazon under the "Prototype Supply" brand. I've had times where I ran out of a particular color for a job and found out he didn't have it in stock. But within a few hours he has gotten back to me through email with updates as to product availability.

At times he has been the one to tell me to go to Amazon and purchase it there as they just got a shipment.

How many filament companies will even give you the time of day for a 2 roll order? Or answer an email without a scripted reply?

You can't go wrong in doing business with this guy :)

vinnie90 - Wouldn't it be nice to somehow have a chart of some sort with pictures and some numbers to better describe the filaments. I presume some PLA might work better in a certain application than another companies PLA.

It would be a nice thing to have.Im sure the community on here would love to update information to it from their experiences.

food for thought (Im not signing my self up for this by the way...lol)

tanju-b - I think the challenge with having a ref chart is that filament production can vary by batch? Are there any quality control standards out there for filament production?

ssignore - I have been buying MattersHackers PLA, and I love it. I have every color and so far not one issue. I have had such good results with there regular PLA, I dont bother with the "Pro PLA".

vinnie90 - I have been printing with the toybuilder's pla. It really isn't bad at all. It came to my office fast, price was nice, and packaging was really good (Vacuumed sealed really tight).

9/10 for me (10 out of 10 meaning PERFECT)

I would definitely buy from them again.

vinnie90 - After almost using up half the roll of toybuilders grey pla I notice that it is breaking randomly....After getting frustraded with Air Printing I stored it back in my cabinet because of this issue. I was thinking maybe the heat or humidity of my office was the cause of this.

I just moved to another office with a different AC unit that has a humidity control. After a couple of days in here I decided to print with it again. Im noticing that I have to babysit it more as the roll gets smaller. It is still breaking. Extremely fragile! I cant even straighten out the plastic to stick it in the extruder. The natural PLA I bought from toybuilding is still working fine.

I am not trying to bash a company, just wanted to let yall know what my experience is. I might have been from this one batch....idk.

defcon3d - I'm using the black PLA from Toybuilder Labs and it's working fine. Can run it between 195 and 220 without issue...
This is my 4th roll and all have been the same. I use it on a Rep.2

I haven't run into the brittle filament issues that Vinnie90 has. Just, lucky, I guess? ;)

j1ceasar@yahoo.com - Just a thought to all concerned - Once you open a roll- I suggest you store them by placing in a vacuum bag and seal it with a food saver - Just an idea if you have humidity problems

vinnie90 - I just put mine in a closed cabinet. With desiccants in a cup. I tried putting desiccant bags in a seal ziplock back with the plastic. It would dry it out tremendously or have tons of water at the bottom of the bag.

raykholo - I've been using PushPlastic PLA and they are pretty good. $29.00 per kg and free 2 day shipping.
I recently got a filastruder and am now producing my own filament. I haven't built a winder yet (waiting on some parts to arrive) but the diameter stays pretty consistent even though it is just coiling onto the floor. The nozzle is a bit undersized so the diameter is around 1.32mm (yes, that thin) but I specify that in Slic3r and no problems. Planning to drill out the nozzle later today...

nateybo - in the infancy of my 3d printing days i ruined a few hot ends using cheap foreign plastic filament. i used to only use ultimachine filament, then i switched to monoprice for a while. now i exclusively use ABS from an ebay store called supertobuy. a kg roll of almost all colors is just under 20 bucks with shipping included. it also it ships from the U.S.

coberdas - Hatchbox is what I use now. The best filament for the price. the only thing you need to do is make the spool hole larger to fix on the holder. They are on Amazon and ebay. A roll costs under $25 and shipping is free. In my ctc printers the abs is stronger and the the layers bond well, better than makerbots abs. I'm not a big fan of toybuilders.

vinnie90 - that is interesting @coberdas. Really think it is better than the Makerbot ABS? I might have to give it a try then.

raykholo - My latest reel of Blue PLA from PushPlastic has been a bit finicky, it is taking a lot of force to extrude and I couldn't get a print without clicking until I jacked up the temp to 260 degrees. You really shouldn't print PLA above 240.
I got PLA from microcenter this morning and my first impression is that it's awesome, and at much more normal temps. If today's prints are solid I'm going back tomorrow for many more reels.

raykholo - Ok, well my order is in. Feel free to throw in any other PLA/ HIPS/ PVA samples - I purchased several kg of filament in these materials locally today and am getting more tomorrow and would be happy to compare.
I design 3D Printers - namely the Cohesion 3D Printer which can print electronics inside of plastic. cohesion3d.com
For the record, I simply use a "cold pull" technique when changing filaments (I guess warm pull is more appropriate though) - I heat the extruder from cold and start lightly pulling at around 70 degrees and between 70 and 130 I pull the filament out as soon as it softens just enough, thus taking any gunk in the chamber along with it. Of course, I use E3D hotends, the ones that never jam, :) and my spring-loaded extruder arm is now made out of carbon fiber, which delivers an extreme amount of pressure on the filament into the drive gear.

nyl0cke - IC3D, Ultimachine, and SeeMeCNC have some good filament on their sites. Ultimachine has ABS, PLA, PVA, HIPS, and Polycarbonate in 1.75 and 3mm, IC3D only has ABS and PLA, but if you really like a color you can order a 50lbs spool for ~$20 a pound. SeeMeCNC only offers 1.75mm, but they have ABS, PLA, all Taulman products, Ninjaflex, and Protopasta Carbonfiber PLA.
